► What is your character's worst fear?
Anya genuinely fears never achieving her dream. Never making something of herself even with all she's done to get there.
For all the ambition and dedication she has poured into her goal, some part of Anya fears it won't come to fruition. The idea of having of all the work she's done meaning nothing frightens her.
What is she if she never gets there? All this time and all her care means... nothing without it. Even if she has to burn through all her money to get there, Anya intends to become a doctor. She's gotten herself this far, and she wants to keep going forward.
Being unable to achieve that scares Anya deeply. She doesn't want to be stuck in a loop of competing hard only to end up in last place. She has to believe in the best of a situation, of a person, or she'll fall apart entirely. She wants the world to be a better place somehow. She has to believe she's making herself into something more than she is now. She needs to make her dream happen, or what has she really done with her life?
She is more than a victim, more than a failed "nurse".
She has to be.
► What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
Persistence. Anya whilst outwardly soft spoken and reserved, she is someone who persists even when it would be far easier to give up. Anya refuses to give up on things. She believes that she can achieve her goals if she keeps chasing after them.
She has failed the medical school entrance exam eight times. Yet, she still persists. Whilst she could settle for anything, she won't. She wants to make this work.
Anya's persistence also applies to her ability to make a bad situation more tolerable. Belief in a better future, in people's good natures is what keeps her persisting onwards. Even while the Tulpar was manned by Jimmy (her abuser) as captain, Anya did her best to keep her head up and make as few waves as possible. She tried to instill some confidence in Jimmy to ease tensions.
Even if her persistence didn't pay off, she would still not take back her own choices. Her world crumbled, but she still kept trying. She kept wanting to live and persist in a cruel world.
► What would make the character happiest? What is their ultimate goal?
Finally getting into medical school would make Anya the happiest. Even if she never became a doctor, actually getting over that hurdle and achieving her biggest goal would make her genuinely so happy. She has always wanted to be a doctor. Anya never wanted the job for the money, nor the prestige that comes with it.
All she wanted was to help. To take care of people where she could. She does this to the best of her abilities in the Tulpar, even if it isn't the most official capacity. Anya still regularly reads textbooks on various medical fields, trying to absorb information where she can. It is the best way to get her closer to her goal and actively help the people she is around now.
► Who is the most important person in your character's life? How has that person impacted them?
Captain Curly. A friend, an ally, a enabler of the worst kind. Someone Anya deeply trusted with her secrets, only to have Curly never act.
Whilst Jimmy irrevocably destroyed her life, Curly's inaction only amplified it. He only emboldened Jimmy to act worse and by proxy led to the deaths of nearly everyone on board.
Casual banter between the two in certain scenes shows a comfortable familiarity. Anya deeply believed Curly to guide the Tulpar, to make sure the crew was safe. His reputation preceded him.
She trusted him with the information of her rape. Believed he could do something about Jimmy. When he did nothing, Anya had to stay out of Jimmy's way. Anya chose to make herself smaller to avoid conflict. Then she realized she was pregnant. She confided in Curly, only to have him refuse to act again. This forced Anya to speak to Jimmy privately after a period of inaction. Thus leading to Jimmy's attempt to crash the ship to 'fix' the problem of her pregnancy.
Curly became the unintentional center of Anya's world post crash. He was the person who suffered horrendous injuries leaving him unable to function much less speak. She had to stay with Curly every day, keeping him as comfortable as she could manage. Even with her own mixed feelings about Curly, she still chose to care for him to the best of her abilities. She still cared about him, as much as she blamed him for the crash.
It is implied Anya intended to take Curly with her when she committed suicide. Locking him in the medical bay with herself for a chance for them both to find peace. Curly is important to her. Someone Anya used to care about, and now just quietly pities.
